OPG vs CBCT: Which Dental Scan Do You Actually Need? | Envision Denta Kolkata
Not sure whether you need an OPG panoramic X-ray or a CBCT 3D scan? We explain the key differences, when each is recommended, and what your dentist is looking for in Kolkata.
Envision Denta — MDS Oral Radiology Team
Specialist oral and maxillofacial radiologists at Envision Denta, Kasba and Behala, South Kolkata.
What is an OPG?
An OPG, or Orthopantomogram, is a panoramic dental X-ray that captures your entire upper and lower jaw in a single image. The machine rotates around your head while you stand still. There is nothing placed inside your mouth, and the whole process takes about 15 seconds.
The result is a wide 2D image showing all your teeth, tooth roots, the jawbone, sinuses, and the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) on both sides. It is the most commonly requested dental X-ray in routine practice.
OPG is available at both Envision Denta branches — Kasba and Behala — on a walk-in basis, with no prior appointment needed.
What is a CBCT scan?
A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan is a 3D imaging system specifically designed for dental and maxillofacial use. Unlike a standard X-ray, CBCT captures hundreds of images in a single rotation and reconstructs them into a full volumetric 3D dataset.
Your dentist or surgeon can then view that dataset from any angle — slicing through bone, measuring nerve distances, checking root canal morphology, or planning an implant site with millimetre precision.
The scan itself takes 20 to 40 seconds and requires no injections or special preparation. You stand comfortably while the machine rotates around your head.
OPG vs CBCT: Side-by-side comparison
Here is a quick look at how the two scan types differ in practice:
| Feature | OPG (Panoramic X-Ray) | CBCT (3D Scan) |
|---|---|---|
| Image type | 2D panoramic | 3D volumetric |
| Scan time | ~15 seconds | 20–40 seconds |
| Radiation dose | Low | Low to moderate (less than medical CT) |
| Bone depth | Not measurable | Precise 3D measurement |
| Nerve mapping | Limited, 2D only | Accurate 3D nerve canal tracing |
| Root canals | Basic view | Full canal morphology |
| Implant planning | Screening only | Essential — full bone data |
| Walk-in availability | Yes | Appointment preferred |
| Cost | Lower | Higher, reflects clinical value |
When is OPG enough?
For most routine dental needs, an OPG gives your dentist all the information they need. Your dentist will typically request an OPG for:
- Initial full-mouth screening for new patients
- Orthodontic treatment planning and progress monitoring
- Routine wisdom tooth assessment before extraction
- Checking overall bone levels in periodontal disease
- Pre-prosthetic assessment before dentures
- Growth and development monitoring in children
If your clinical question can be answered by a 2D overview, an OPG is the right choice. It is faster, lower-cost, and readily available on a walk-in basis.
When do you need a CBCT scan?
CBCT becomes necessary when your dentist needs three-dimensional data that a flat X-ray simply cannot provide. Common indications include:
- Dental implant planning — bone volume, density, and nerve canal position
- Complex wisdom tooth extraction — nerve proximity mapping
- Root canal treatment for calcified or unusual canal morphology
- Orthodontic airway analysis and skeletal assessment
- TMJ (jaw joint) morphology and disc-space evaluation
- Cyst, tumour, or pathology investigation
- Pre-surgical assessment for oral or orthognathic surgery
Your dentist will only request a CBCT when the 3D data will genuinely change the treatment decision. It is not a routine scan — it is a clinical tool for specific situations.
What dentists in Kolkata recommend
Across South Kolkata, the pattern is fairly consistent. Dentists use OPG for their initial workup and general cases. When treatment becomes more complex — particularly for implants, oral surgery, or endodontics — they refer patients to a specialist imaging centre for CBCT.
Envision Denta works with over 500 referring dentists across Kasba, Ballygunge, Behala, Jadavpur, and the wider South Kolkata area. We offer both OPG and CBCT under one roof, with MDS-qualified radiologists interpreting every scan.
If your dentist is unsure which scan to request, our radiologists are happy to advise. You can reach us at both the Kasba and Behala branches.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an OPG and a CBCT scan?
An OPG is a 2D panoramic X-ray showing all teeth and the jawbone in a flat image. A CBCT produces a full 3D volumetric dataset, letting your dentist view bone depth, nerve position, and anatomy from any cross-section.
Is a CBCT scan better than an OPG?
It depends on what your dentist needs. OPG is ideal for routine screening and general assessments. CBCT is better when 3D information is clinically necessary, such as for implant planning or complex extractions. Your dentist will recommend the right scan for your case.
Does a CBCT scan use more radiation than an OPG?
Yes, slightly more than OPG, but far less than a medical CT scan. At Envision Denta, we follow the ALARA principle and select the smallest field-of-view for the clinical task.
Where can I get an OPG or CBCT scan in Kolkata?
Envision Denta offers both at two specialist imaging centres in South Kolkata — Kasba (Rajdanga Main Road) and Behala (Jadu Colony). Walk-ins are welcome for OPG. CBCT appointments are recommended.
